Maneesha on Madras  (Back to Maneeska's Page)

As  told to Agly Uncle:
I spent almost 4.5 yrs of my "jawan" life in the city of Chennai...then known as Madras. It was my first encounter and exposure to the Southern World of India.Till then I didnt know the differences between a "Mallu",'Golti","Kannadiga", and a "Tamilian".

First impression of Chennai:

Tooooo hot and sultry! Not that Mumbai was any different but then I had just returned from a brief stint abroad and was still flying high!! :)

What I liked about Chennai:

  • The typical traditional "Tam Brahmin" culture......quite conservative!I used to se people draw "rangoli" early morning evryday outside their houses.

  • Emphasis on good education amongst the people. Most of the ppl i knew are now engineers and doctors.
  • Food-nothing beats the Tamilian Idli Dosa and Sambar.Oops! I forgot the Vada! :) Thair Sadam is also one of my favs.
  • My school-Asan Memorial!....I spent the most important formative years of my life there! U know...part of my Jawani!! :) lol
  • Marina Beach and the Besant nagar beach.
  • Madhavan and Ajith -the tamil filmi stars!
  • I learnt a new language!-Tamil
  • Made some gr8 frends in life and for life!
  • Intelligent ppl.
  • Mahabalipuram

What I didn't like about Chennai:

  • Extreme emphasis and rivalry on the basis of caste!

  • Too much of Reservation system in all institutions!

  • Fanatics w.r.t the Tamil Film Industry!-I mean imagine having a temple built for a mortal like Khushboo.....Booo!!! and not to forget the following that Superstar Rajnikanth had and still continues to do so!

  • Politicians.....they are all the same and yet the literate ppl continue to vote for them. And i must mention the Huge Kingsize Hoardings and Cut outs of these Mahaan politicians!

  • Weather!

  • Language barrier-I think its high time that resident people realise that Hindi is the national language of our country and they oughta learn it. All "outsiders" have to learn the not-so-easy language! And those who know hindi pretend not to know it!

  • Coum river-it stinks!

  • Mosquitoes
